Storage Heater Replacement Old For New!

The main criteria being that the property does not have central heating, and there is gas to the property. Its classsed as a Storage Heater Grant

Electric storage heaters are domestic heaters which store thermal energy and release it to heat your home when you need it. They are especially designed to convert cheap night time, off-peak electricity into thermal energy, store it, and then release it continuously throughout the day.  This is why they are sometimes referred to as night storage heaters.

Modern high heat retention electric storage heaters are much more energy efficient than their predecessors. They have better insulation to preserve the stored heat longer and a convection facility to top up the heat required for very cold days. They have LCD displays which allow you to see heat input & output levels and intelligent control systems which learn your heating requirements.

Achieve ‘Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) 2030’ with Government Funding.

The prevailing trend from government is to reduce grants and increase legislation pressure on landlords. Act now to insulate yourself from cost of achieving Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard MEES.

What are Electric Storage Heaters?

Storage Heater Replacement Grant

What are Electric Storage Heaters?

Electric storage heaters contain heat retaining clay bricks which store heat generated from electricity during the night and release it throughout the following daytime. They are sometimes referred to as night storage heaters because they are designed to take cheap, off peak electricity during the night time when demand is low and store it until it is required during the daytime.

There are four types of electric storage heater, with each one providing a different level of control:

  • Manually controlled storage heaters
  • Automatic Storage Heaters
  • Combination models
  • Smart fan assisted storage heaters

When demand for electricity is low, it is sold to householders at a lower price than when demand is high. Electricity supply companies have therefore introduced systems such as Economy 7 to provide cheaper electricity during the seven hours of night time.

By using night time electricity to keep your home warm during the day time, electric storage heaters will always be cheaper to run than electric heating systems which take electricity during the day time.

By taking advantage of an ECO Grant from the Affordable Warmth Scheme, free storage heaters will reduce your heating bills by up to 30%.

Electric Storage Heaters and Economy 7

Economy 7 is an electricity tariff where your usage of electricity can be measured and charged according to the time of day.

It means that if you have electric storage heaters you can pay less to heat them up during the night than during daytime hours. The off-peak cost of electricity used during night time hours is around one third of the cost of on-peak electricity you use during the day time.

Economy 7 is ideal for households with electric storage heaters because they heat up using cheap electricity and keep your house warm when electricity would be more expensive, during the day.

Modern storage heaters are much more energy efficient than older models, so if you qualify for free storage heaters your heating bills will fall further. Not only are you using cheap electricity to heat your home, with modern, energy energy efficient new free storage heaters you will use even less electricity.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Storage Heaters

Advantages of Electric Storage Heaters

  • Storage heaters can be installed almost anywhere, as more homes have mains electricity than a gas supply.
  • Storage heaters have few moving parts and consequently they are very reliable and require little or no maintenance.
  • Storage heaters are relatively inexpensive to install compared to other domestic heating systems as they require no expensive pipework or plumbing.
  • Free Storage Heaters may be available with an ECO Grant from the Affordable Warmth Scheme.

Disadvantages of Electric Storage Heaters

  • Electricity is more expensive than gas per unit of heat energy.
  • Storage heaters are less flexible than some other heating systems and do not offer instant control in the same way.
  • If your heating has been switched off for a while and you are relying on over night electricity to heat up the storage heaters, you will not have heating until the following day.

Combination Convector Electric Storage Heaters

Combination convector electric storage heaters are just like standard electric storage heaters but with a built in convector heater.

The convector heater can offer an alternative heat source to the electric storage heater or a boost to the heating provided by the storage heater.

Fan Assisted Electric Storage Heaters

Fan assisted electric storage heaters use electricity from an off peak electricity tariff supply to heat up a highly insulated thermal storage unit.

Instead of just releasing that heat by convection, a silent fan takes in cool air from the room and discharges hot air through a vent.

Fan assisted electric storage heaters are more efficient at retaining the heat they have built up and the supply of warm air into the room can be controlled by a timer and a thermostat.

Free Storage Heaters Scheme - New for Old

The Free Storage Heaters Scheme is based on the ‘New for Old’ principle.

That means that you must have broken electric storage heaters installed in your property at the time that your ECO Accredited Surveyor visits your home.

If you qualify for Free Storage Heaters or a Storage Heater Grant towards the cost of replacing them, the installation company MUST be able to remove your old heaters.

Free Storage Heaters Grant Calculation

If you meet Storage Heater Grant Qualifying Criteria, your grant will be based on a number of factors, including:

  • The type of home you live in, i.e, detached, semi-detached, terraced or flat.
  • How many bedrooms there are in your home.
  • How well insulated your home is.
  • Whether it was constructed with cavity walls or solid walls.
  • Whether you have other forms of heating in addition to storage heaters.

Your storage heater grant will then be compared to the cost of installing the number and size of new heaters recommended by the ECO Scheme. From this, your installer will be able to assess whether any contribution from you will be required or not.  If not, you will have free storage heaters installed in your home to replace your old ones.

Free Storage Heaters - Qualifying Criteria for a Storage Heater Grant

There are 3 parts to Free Storage Heaters Qualifying Criteria and you MUST meet all of them to be awarded a Storage Heater Grant.

Firstly, you must live in your own home.

Secondly, you must receive at least one of the following State Benefits, Tax Credits or Other Allowances:

  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit
  • Income Support, Income-Related ESA or Income-Based JSA
  • DLA or PIP
  • Attendance Allowance or Carer’s Allowance
  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Child Benefit (subject to maximum income thresholds)
  • War Pensions Mobility Supplement
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • Armed Forces independence Payment

Thirdly, you must have at least one broken electric night storage heater installed in your home when your ECO Accredited Surveyor visits you.

Why was the Free Storage Heaters Scheme introduced?

As part of its policy to combat climate change, the government introduced the ECO Scheme as its flagship household energy efficiency initiative.

The ECO Scheme has two aims: reducing carbon emissions from UK domestic housing stock and cutting heating bills for low income households.

To help achieve this, ECO grants are offered to replace old, inefficient heating systems and install new ones, and also to install insulation.

To qualify for a storage heater grant or even free storage heaters, there must be someone receiving one of the qualifying benefits who lives permanently at the property.

Will it cost me anything?

The initial survey is free of charge and there are no administration fees to the free storage heaters scheme.

However, if your storage heater grant is not high enough to pay for the installation of new storage heaters you may be asked to make a contribution.

You will not know this until after the free survey and you can withdraw your application without charge.

Eco Green Experts exsplain the Governments Eco 3 scheme

Eco Green Experts Work hand in hand with the The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and government energy efficiency scheme in Great Britain to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty to offer certain critira home a Free Boiler Grant.

The scheme began in April 2013, and over time it has been amended. The latest policy, ECO3, commenced on 3 December 2018, and applies to measures completed from 1 October 2018.

You can see a summary of the changes made to the scheme in 2018 on the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s.

This ECO policy will be entirely formed from one obligation, the Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO). Under HHCRO, obligated suppliers must mainly promote measures which improve the ability of low income, fuel poor and vulnerable households to heat their homes. This includes actions that result in heating savings, such as the replacement of a broken heating system or the upgrade of an inefficient heating system.

Under ECO2t, which ran from 1 April 2017 to 30 September 2018, suppliers were also required to deliver against an additional obligation called the Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO).
