Free Boiler Grant

Free Boiler Grant

The main criteria to qualify for a Free Boiler Grant is being that the property does not have central heating, and there is gas to the property.

The property can be anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales to qualify for the Free Boiler Grant grant.

We aim to Achieve ‘Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) 2030’ with Government Funding.

For a Free Boiler Grant the prevailing trend from government is to reduce grant and increase legislation pressure on landlords. Act now to insulate yourself from cost of achieving Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard MEES.

The government guidance for Free Boiler Grant state install must be:

  • A central heating system or a connection to a district heating system
  • Renewable options available to EPC Score G to A
  • Main Gas option only available for EPC Score E to A
  • And installed into a dwelling that: has never had a central heating system
  • Or heated by electric storage heaters which are all either broken or inefficient

To qualify for Free Boiler Grant, either you or someone living permanently with you, must receive at least one of the following State Benefits, Tax Credits or Other Allowances unless you qualify under ECO Flex Rules:

  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Severe Disablement Allowance
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Child Benefit (subject to maximum household income thresholds)

How do I get a free boiler grant?

How do I get a free boiler grant?

A Free Boiler Grant and heavily subsidised replacement boilers are available via ECO, a Government Scheme which has been set up to help low-income households access home efficiency improvements to reduce the cost of heating their homes, and to reduce their carbon footprints.

If you meet the benefits related criteria for a Free Boiler Grant, and your current boiler is at least 6 years old (not condensing), you could qualify. It is as simple as that.

Free Boiler Grants are non-repayable, this means you do not have to pay any money back at any time. There are no complicated terms and conditions. If you qualify for a grant, you can have a new boiler installed along with new heating controls (where necessary).

The amount of funding you get is determined by the efficiency of your home, so an energy assessment will be carried out free of charge. In some instances, a small contribution may be required.

Do Householders in Privately Rented Homes, Council Houses and Housing Association Properties qualify for ECO3 Grants?

YES but qualifying criteria and products available are different for householders in this type of property and they are unlikely to qualify for free boiler grants.

Householders in social housing (council and housing association properties) may qualify for insulation grants if the property has an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of E, F or G. ECO Grants are also available for the installation of central heating systems in social housing properties

BUT ONLY WHERE the property has not had a central heating system installed before, i.e., first time installations. Householders in privately rented homes may qualify for ECO3 heating system grants and insulation grants but NOT to replace broken heating systems.  Free boiler grants to replace broken boilers are not available to private tenants because it is the landlord’s responsibility to provide a working heating system.

How does the Free Boiler Grant Scheme work?

The Government has set targets for the large energy companies to reduce their carbon emissions from energy production.

As part of this commitment to carbon reduction, energy companies have provided funding to pay for more energy efficient heating systems and better insulation in qualifying homes, including a free boiler in some cases.

In this way qualifying households will use less energy and therefore emit less carbon dioxide, thus helping energy companies to meet their carbon reduction targets.

Energy Companies Obligations

The Electricity and Gas (Energy Companies Obligation) Order 2012 was passed by Parliament in December 2012 and it set up the ‘Energy Companies Obligations’, referred to as ‘ECO’. The Affordable Warmth Scheme is part of ECO.

The original ECO Scheme was intended to run until March 2015 but was extended for 2 years as ECO2, to March 2017. The current ECO Free Boiler Grant Scheme started on 1st October 2018 and will run until March 2022.

The Affordable Warmth Obligation provides funding for households which may be suffering from fuel poverty to apply to have a free boiler and free home insulation installed. The way the Government has decided to target homes is by reference to them receiving certain state benefits.

Will funding for Free Boiler Grants run out?

In a word YES, even politicians believe that there isn’t enough ECO funding for free boiler grants for all those who qualify.

In an answer to a question by Caroline Flint MP in 2013, Gregory Barker MP, the then Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change commented that “around 230,000 households on low incomes or in low income areas will be assisted through the ECO scheme each year”.

That all seems very worthy but the last estimate for the number of homes suffering from fuel poverty in the United Kingdom was almost five million, or around 19% of all domestic properties.

With more austerity measures planned as the Government deals with Brexit negotiations, it is likely that many householders who are entitled to apply for a free boiler may not be successful.

If you feel that you may qualify for the Free Boiler Grants Scheme, you should apply immediately whilst ECO funding is still available.

How qualifies for a free boiler grant?

How qualifies for a free boiler grant?

If you receive the correct combination of income-related benefits, including Tax Credits, Universal Credits, Carers or Attendance Allowance, ESA or JSA, then you could have your old boiler replaced with a brand new boiler for little, to no cost (full list of benefits below). Fingers crossed you are eligable for a Free Boiler Grant

As well as receiving the correct combination of benefits, your current gas, oil or LPG boiler must have been installed before 2013.

If it is less than 6 years old, the scheme makes an assumption that is more cost effective to repair your old boiler, than it is to have it replaced on the scheme.

Some of the benefits mean that you will qualify for a boiler grant automatically, with no other requirements. With some others you may need to have an extra qualifying component such as being responsible for a child under 16, or earning below a certain gross amount. The full criteria can be discussed during the application process.

As part of its policy on climate change, the UK Government has agreed to legally binding international commitments to reduce potentially harmful emissions caused by the production of energy from fossil fuels. Offering Free Boiler Grants will help towards this objective.

Reducing household energy bills

At the same time, the Government has set targets to reduce fuel poverty by helping low income households to reduce their fuel consumption by installing energy efficient central heating boilers.

Under the Affordable Warmth Obligation, if you satisfy certain criteria relating to state benefits and the condition of your existing central heating system, you may qualify for Free Boiler Grants.

Will it cost me anything?

Due to current funding restrictions for the Affordable Warmth Scheme some householders may be asked to contribute to the cost of installation so just apply and your on your was for a Free Boiler Grant

Consequently, not every applicant will get a free boiler. The installer not be able to advise you of this until after your free survey has been carried out.

The value of Free Boiler Grants are based on the type of property you live in, how many bedrooms it has and several other factors.

Eco Green Experts exsplain the Governments Eco 3 scheme

Eco Green Experts Work hand in hand with the The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and government energy efficiency scheme in Great Britain to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty to offer certain critira home a Free Boiler Grant.

The scheme began in April 2013, and over time it has been amended. The latest policy, ECO3, commenced on 3 December 2018, and applies to measures completed from 1 October 2018.

You can see a summary of the changes made to the scheme in 2018 on the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s.

This ECO policy will be entirely formed from one obligation, the Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO). Under HHCRO, obligated suppliers must mainly promote measures which improve the ability of low income, fuel poor and vulnerable households to heat their homes. This includes actions that result in heating savings, such as the replacement of a broken heating system or the upgrade of an inefficient heating system.

Under ECO2t, which ran from 1 April 2017 to 30 September 2018, suppliers were also required to deliver against an additional obligation called the Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO).

Cavity Wall Insulation Grant?

Cavity Wall Insulation Grant

About a third of all the heat lost in an uninsulated home escapes through the walls.

In general, houses built from the 1990s onwards have wall insulation to keep the heat in, but if your house is older than that, it may not have any wall insulation at all. Pre-1920 older houses are more likely to have solid walls.

A solid wall has no cavity; each wall is a single solid wall, usually made of brick or stone.

Your property may be suitable for Party Wall Insulation:

A party wall is a wall built to divide two adjoining buildings. Party wall insulation is installed from the roof space and the outside of the property, causing very little disruption to you.

If your existing cavity wall insulation was fitted prior to 1995, and there is no CIGA guarantee in place, your property may be suitable for replacing the cavity wall insulation with the latest and most efficient insulation.
